about

I wrote this song one morning as I biked to work. I did a lot of thinking those mornings. I loved the feeling of weaving in and out of traffic and racing against cars trying to see if I could bike faster than the traffic was moving. I always made it to work out of breath and sweating but I always got a lot of thinking done. There's something incredibly peaceful and calming about putting your head down and sinking into the rhythm of the pedals.

Also, I really did have a pair of rainbow shoes. They were white shoes I bought at winners and it took seven sharpies and the better part of a week to colour them in. All the clothing in this song I owned in the last couple years of high school. I guess that's kind of what this song is about. That nostalgia we get for simpler times in our lives when we knew what was expected of us. Not necessarily high school but you know what I mean. Yeah.

lyrics

I have a pair of rainbow shoes for to walk across the sky
But there's a hole in the left one where I ran out of time
And if you were the ocean I would be a rowboat
Too small to get by

I have an aviator's hat, glasses and jacket match
I could fly away any time I wanted to
In my invisible airplane I could fly around the world
But I'd come right back again I couldn't leave you behind

So turn you're collar up against the wind and take refuge in my shadow
We can pretend the rain is mistletoe and kiss under the clouds
It'll take us back to christmas time when we were warm and we were happy
It's been cold for so long

So sing me a song of yesterday
I'd like to come and laugh again I'd like to come and play
But I cannot afford an aeroplane
And I cannot walk across the sky

I cannot fly
